“The strikers win the fans’ hearts, the defenders win the matches”

Müller: “That’s how a send-off should be”

【穆勒:我以为他会轻点……】

(没被打死啊?!)

Although Germany comfortably won 2-0 in last night’s friendly encounter with Finland, the final result was very much in the background as German football said goodbye and thank you to Bastian Schweinsteiger. His friend, Thomas Müller was of course there last night and told DFB.de all about the special evening.

Question: Mr Müller, how emotional did you find the evening?

Thomas Müller: It was obviously more emotional for Basti than us. But for me, it was lovely to see how the fans cheered whole-heartedly every time he touched the ball. Even though the stadium wasn’t sold-out, there was a tremendous atmosphere. For Basti it was incredible, the fans made so much noise – that’s how a send-off should be.

Question: Do you have any words of appreciation for him?

Müller: He won’t now disappear out of my life, we’ll stay in contact - only our sporting relationship has come to an end. I’m very happy for him that tonight was so special. You saw that we’re just normal people with emotions. It was a beautiful thing to experience.

Question: Along with Manuel Neuer, you carried Bastian Schweinsteiger on your shoulders after the game. Was that tiring?

Müller: I thought he was lighter! (laughs) But seriously, I’m glad that he’s still fit – even if he’s not allowed to fully train at United. He’s still in good shape so I could manage it, but as my stature gives away - I’m not made for that kind of thing.
